You're Invited... On Tuesday, November 6th from 6-8 pm, the SPCA Albrecht Center in Aiken will host their last event of the year with a ‘jolly’ good time. Join staff, volunteers, board members and supporters at the SPCA’s Mitchell Plaza Thrift Store; located at 1589 Whiskey Road in Aiken – ‘Where Shopping Saves Lives.’ The evening will feature live music by Rick Scott, beer and wine, appetizers, fantastic door prizes, an ugly Christmas sweater contest, all new winter apparel and the Grand Opening of the store’s Christmas Décor Shop. If you can believe it, the holidays are quickly approaching, which means time with family, holiday cheer and lots of traveling. Last year, a whopping 507,000 animals were flown commercially in the United States, according to the Department of Transportation. Unfortunately, 24 of these animals died from the conditions of their flights, which resulted in various airlines altering their pet flight policies to ensure better safety and standards of care for journeying pets. Pick Me! SC Results – Thank You South Carolina!

On October 5-7, the SPCA Albrecht Center was one of 50 shelters, rescues and Petco stores across the state to participate in Pick Me! SC, a history-making statewide adoption event. With combined forces, hard work, and the love of adopters, more than 1,188 animals statewide found their new forever homes over the three-day weekend. The SPCA acted as the Midland’s hub for the event and hosted Barnwell County Animal Shelter during the weekend. The Albrecht Center alone found homes for 14 dogs, 15 cats and 2 bunnies, and Barnwell found homes for 6 dogs and 2 cats. Shelter Cats Are Waiting, and Waiting.

Dogs are more popular than cats. If you're a cat person, you probably just furrowed your brow at that declaration, but it's true. According to The American Veterinary Medical Association's 2012 U.S. Pet Ownership & Demographics Sourcebook[i], American dog households beat out cat households by slightly more than six percent.
