TAKE A SHELTER DOG OUT FOR FUN!
Doggie Day Out lets anyone take a shelter dog out for a walk, an hour or two of fresh air, or a full day of adventure. Stroll downtown, explore Hopelands Gardens, hike Hitchcock Woods, or grab a coffee at New Moon Cafe. You get a walking buddy. The dog gets a break from the shelter. Even a short outing can reduce stress, build confidence, and help a dog get one step closer to a forever home.

Give a shelter dog a break. Take one for a walk. Change a life.
Doggie Day Out is the SPCA Albrecht Center’s easy, feel-good program that lets community members take a shelter dog out for a day, or even just an hour or two, of fresh air, exploration, and fun. Anyone can participate. A walk downtown. A visit to Hopelands Gardens. A hike through Hitchcock Woods. A coffee stop at New Moon Cafe. You get a walking buddy. The dog gets a break from the shelter.

Shelter life can be stressful, especially for dogs who spend weeks or months in kennels. Doggie Day Out was created to give these dogs a much-needed pause from shelter life while helping them experience the world beyond their kennel doors.

Why Doggie Day Out matters

For the dogs:

  • Stress relief: Time outside the shelter helps dogs relax and reset
  • Socialization: New environments, people, and routines build confidence
  • Increased adoption potential: Photos and stories from outings help dogs connect with potential adopters
  • Research and real-world experience show that shelter dogs who participate in field trip and sleepover programs are far more likely to be adopted. Sometimes, all it takes is one good day.
For you:
  • Low commitment, big impact: You don’t have to adopt or foster to help
  • Fun and fulfillment: Enjoy companionship while doing something meaningful
  • Be a dog advocate: Sharing your experience helps dogs reach future families
Participating is simple and doesn’t require prior experience or an appointment. Visit the SPCA Albrecht Center Monday through Saturday during open hours. Complete a short form and review guidelines with staff. Choose a dog to spend time with!
Enjoy your outing and take a few photos or videos. Return your dog and complete a short “report card” to help staff learn more about them.
We provide the supplies, guidance, and support you need. You provide the time, attention, and care.
Doggie Day Out isn’t just a fun experience. It’s enrichment. It’s advocacy. And sometimes, it’s the moment that helps a dog find their forever home.

Stop by and take a shelter dog out for a walk, an adventure, or a day to remember. One outing can make a world of difference.
