In 2025, over 1,300 animals found homes through the SPCA Albrecht Center. Every adoption matters, whether it happens in a day or after years of waiting. But some stories stay with us a little longer. Not because they were easy, but because they remind us why patience, persistence, and community support are essential to lifesaving work. Let’s take a look at a few of the adoptions that defined our year.

Oliver is loving life in his new home.
Oliver: Three Years, One Week Short
Oliver had everything going for him. He was energetic, affectionate, smart, and goofy. The kind of dog you’d expect to be adopted quickly. But weeks turned into months, and months into years. Oliver was adopted just one week shy of his three-year anniversary at the shelter.
Today, Oliver is loving life in his new home and even comes back to visit us pretty often. At the time, we thought Oliver’s adoption would be the biggest win of the year. Fortunately for us all, this was just the beginning.

Tallulah is thriving in her new home.
Tallulah: A Reset That Changed Everything
Tallulah arrived at our shelter in February 2024, bright-eyed and full of potential. But shelter life was hard on her. The longer she stayed, the more stress took hold. She paced. She barked. She struggled to settle. The dog we knew was in there became harder for adopters to see.
Tallulah didn’t need more time in a kennel. She needed space to breathe.
A long-term foster placement gave her that reset. Away from the constant noise and stimulation of the shelter, Tallulah was finally able to decompress and show her true personality. Just a few months later, in October, she was adopted. Today, she’s thriving in her home, a reminder that sometimes the right environment makes all the difference.

Roly Poly Guacamole
Roly Poly Guacamole: Waiting for the Right Match
Nine months is a long time for a cat to wait. Roly Poly Guacamole was with us far longer than most cats, not because he was difficult, but because he was particular. He had his quirks, and he needed someone who could appreciate them. We could see his charm clearly. It just took time for the right person to see it too.
When that match finally happened, it stuck. Roly settled into his new home and hasn’t looked back. His adoption was a quiet win, but an important one, proof that “different” doesn’t mean unadoptable.

Seven
Seven: An Unorthodox Path to Success
Seven made it very clear that shelter life was not for him. He spent over two years with us, and during that time, he struggled visibly. He jumped constantly in his kennel. He threw himself against the door when people walked by. It wasn’t bad behavior. It was stress, plain and simple.
Eventually, we tried something different. Seven went into a long-term foster home and that decision was crucial to his success. In a calmer environment, he was able to regulate, learn, and finally be seen for who he really was. He was adopted directly from foster, reminding us that unorthodox paths do work.

Lars, adopted into a great family after 5 years!
Lars: Five Years of Waiting, One Perfect Match
Lars was with us for nearly five years. His adoption came just one week before that anniversary, and if we’re honest, it was one we never saw coming. Lars reminded us that no matter how long an animal waits, there is still a home out there. Sometimes it just takes longer to find it.
Lars is thriving with his family now. We miss him, but we’re grateful beyond words that he finally has what he always deserved.
These adoptions didn’t happen overnight. They happened because of foster families willing to say yes, adopters willing to look twice, staff and volunteers who refused to give up, and a community that believes every animal is worth the wait.
We would like to invite you to get involved. Whether that means adopting, fostering, volunteering your time, or donating to support the work behind the scenes, every role matters.
We are located at 199 Willow Run Rd in Aiken SC and are open Monday-Friday 11am-4:30pm and until 6pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays. If you’ve ever wondered how you could be part of a second chance like these, we’d love to welcome you.
