At the SPCA Albrecht Center for Animal Welfare, we meet a lot of animals with special stories, but every now and then, one comes along that truly stays with you. Bonnie and Buster are that kind of story.

Bonnie, a 12-year-old mixed breed, and her son Buster, age 10, have been together since the very beginning of their lives. Buster was born with Bonnie by his side, and since then the two have never known life apart. Their bond isn’t just strong, it’s lifelong, unbreakable, and deeply rooted in comfort, familiarity, and love.

In February, they were surrendered to our shelter under difficult but compassionate circumstances. Their owner, a senior herself, made the incredibly hard decision to let them go after realizing she could no longer provide the level of care Bonnie and Buster needed. It’s a decision no pet owner ever wants to face, but one made out of love and a desire to give them the best chance at a happy future.

Now, Bonnie and Buster find themselves starting over in their golden years. Senior pets like these two are often the most overlooked in shelters. Most adopters naturally gravitate toward puppies and younger dogs, drawn in by their energy and long life ahead. But what often gets missed is just how much senior dogs have to offer – and in many ways, they can be the perfect companions. Bonnie and Buster are a perfect example.

While they may be 12 and 10 years old, they still have a playful spark. They enjoy their squeaky toys and occasional bursts of fun, but they’re just as content lounging nearby, soaking up attention, or simply enjoying a quiet moment with their people. They’re easygoing, affectionate, and well past the chaos of puppyhood.

For seniors or individuals looking for a more relaxed, low-energy lifestyle, Bonnie and Buster are an ideal match. They don’t require intense exercise routines or constant stimulation. Instead, they offer steady companionship, gentle affection, and a calming presence that can bring comfort and joy to a home.

They also get along well with most other dogs, as long as their canine companions understand how to be respectful of their age and space; something we can all appreciate as we get older.

What Bonnie and Buster need now is simple: a soft place to land together, a loving family, and the chance to spend their remaining years surrounded by comfort and care. They don’t need perfection. They don’t need a big, busy household. They just need someone willing to open their heart to two deserving dogs who have already given a lifetime of love, and still have so much left to give.

We encourage you to look beyond age and see the incredible value in senior pets. Bonnie and Buster are proof that love doesn’t fade with time – it deepens.

Come meet Bonnie and Buster at the SPCA Albrecht Center for Animal Welfare and see for yourself just how special their bond truly is. Their next chapter is waiting… it just needs a place to begin. 🐾
