Winter brings colder days, shorter nights, and sometimes relentless rain, forcing both pets and their owners indoors more often. As the cold air sets in, it’s important to ensure our pets stay safe, comfortable, and healthy. Here are some tips to help you adapt your pet care routine for the season:

Keep Pets Warm

If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them! Pets are vulnerable to frostbite and hypothermia just like humans, so bring them indoors during extreme weather. For pets with short fur or little body fat, consider cozy sweaters or jackets when venturing outside. In your home, make sure your pet has a warm, draft-free sleeping spot. A plush bed with extra blankets off the floor will keep them snug on those chilly nights.

Protect Paws and Skin

Cold weather can be tough on your pet’s paws as dry air and chilly winds can cause itchy, flaky skin. A humidifier can help maintain moisture levels in your home, and limiting baths during winter can prevent your pet’s skin from drying out. After walks, clean and dry their feet, paying special attention to the areas between their toes. For extra protection, consider pet booties or a paw balm that helps with moisturizing.

Indoor Enrichment: Keeping Pets Engaged and Happy

For pets who can’t enjoy their usual outdoor adventures, indoor activities are key to keeping them mentally and physically stimulated. This is especially important during rainy or freezing weather, which can disrupt their routines.

For Cats:

  • Window Watching Stations: Place a perch or bed near a window where your cat can observe the outside world. Adding a bird feeder outside the window can provide endless entertainment.
  • Interactive Toys: Use puzzle feeders or toys that mimic prey movements. Rotating toys regularly keeps their curiosity piqued.
  • Indoor Gardens: Create a mini garden with cat-safe plants like catnip or wheatgrass. This gives them a taste of the outdoors indoors.
  • Playtime and Training: Engage their hunting instincts with laser pointers or feather wands. Short training sessions using treats can also be a fun bonding activity.
  • Cat TV: Many cats enjoy watching videos of birds, squirrels, or fish. Streaming platforms often have “Cat TV” content to keep them entertained.

For Dogs:

  • Hide and Seek Games: Hide treats or toys around the house for your dog to find. This combines physical activity with mental stimulation.
  • Indoor Obstacle Courses: Create simple courses with household items to challenge their agility.
  • Scent Work: Let your dog use their amazing sense of smell by creating scent trails or hiding treats for them to track down.
  • Chew Toys and Puzzle Feeders: These can keep your dog busy while providing mental exercise.
  • Training Sessions: Use the winter months to brush up on basic commands or teach new tricks with positive reinforcement.

Winter Walks and Safety

If the weather permits, quick, brisk walks can provide exercise while keeping body heat up. Be mindful of hazards like salt-based deicers or antifreeze spills, which are toxic to pets. Always knock on the hood of your car before starting it to ensure no cats are sheltering inside for warmth.

Winter care goes beyond keeping pets warm. It’s about ensuring their overall safety and well-being. With these tips, your furry family members can enjoy the season as much as you do!
