Valentine’s Day is usually about flowers, chocolates, and reservations. But at the SPCA Albrecht Center, we’re inviting the community to try something a little different this year by spending the weekend with a shelter dog who could really use a break.

Formerly known as Albrecht Adventure Day, Doggie Day Out gives community members the chance to take a shelter dog out for the day. No long-term commitment required. It’s simple, flexible, and one of the most impactful ways to support dogs who are struggling with shelter life.

Shelters are busy, loud, and unpredictable by nature. Even the most social, well-adjusted dogs can become stressed after weeks or months in a kennel. Doggie Day Out is meant to give dogs a reset through time outside, one-on-one attention, and a chance to just be a dog again.

It provides stress relief and mental enrichment. It helps dogs practice real-world skills outside the shelter. We see personalities come forward. We learn how they behave in cars, on walks, around strangers, or curled up on a couch. That information helps us make better adoption matches, and it helps adopters feel more confident when choosing a pet. It gives us photos, notes, and stories that help adopters see the dog beyond the kennel door. And the impact doesn’t stop with the dogs.

For participants, Doggie Day Out is a low-barrier way to get involved. You don’t need to foster long-term. You don’t need prior experience. You don’t even need a big plan. Some dogs go on hikes. Some grab a pup cup. Some spend the afternoon lounging at home, catching up on naps they haven’t been able to enjoy in a busy shelter.

When dogs leave the shelter for a few hours, we see them relax. Long shelter stays can lead to anxiety, frustration, and behavior that doesn’t reflect who a dog truly is. A few hours of calm, structure, and attention can interrupt that cycle. Participating is easy and does not require an appointment.

Stop by the SPCA Albrecht Center during program hours. Complete a short form outlining your plans for the day. With help from staff, choose a dog who’s a good fit for your outing.

We provide the supplies you’ll need, along with guidance on dog-friendly places and tips for a successful day. After your outing, you’ll return the dog and fill out a brief report card about how things went. Those notes become part of the dog’s profile and help us advocate for them more effectively.

If you find yourself wishing the day didn’t have to end, you can also ask about overnight options or fostering.

This Valentine’s Day weekend, Doggie Day Out is a reminder that love doesn’t have to look one specific way. Sometimes it looks like a leash, a car ride, and a few quiet hours away from the noise.

The SPCA Albrecht Center for Animal Welfare is open Monday–Friday 11am-4:30pm and with extended hours until 6pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Please visit the shelter and ask how you can help. One day out can make a lasting difference, and for some dogs, it’s the first step toward home.
