Happy New Year! If you're a pet lover looking at a lot of blank spaces on your 2017 calendar or digital agenda, get your pen or keyboard ready because I have some pet-friendly dates that you will most definitely want to remember.
Let's start with February, which is Spay/Neuter Awareness Month. February 28th is World Spay Day and the SPCA Albrecht Center will be raising awareness and raising money for affordable spay/neuter services with a SPAY-ghetti Dinner from 5 - 8pm. Meals are just $8 in advance, $10 at the door and include a plate of spaghetti (with or without meatballs), salad, bread and a drink. Dine in at the SPCA or take-out.
April is National Volunteer Month, and once again, SPCA volunteers will be celebrated with some good food and volunteer-voted awards on April 2nd. Serena's Star 2017 will also be awarded to an outstanding pet who is making a difference in our community. Look for a nomination form soon at LetLoveLive.org.
A few short weeks later, get your walking shoes laced and leashes ready for the SPCA Walk for Animals! Register to walk and gather sponsors to raise money for homeless pets and the SPCA's adoption efforts. The 2017 Walk for Animals is scheduled for April 23rd from 1-5pm. Stay tuned for more information soon.
The SPCA's very popular Yappy Hour season starts May 3rd and runs first Wednesdays through September at 6pm on the patio. Live music, open dog park, cash bar and food available. C'mon get Yappy on May 3, June 7, July 5, August 2 and September 6.
Also in May is the SPCA's third annual Kitten Shower and Supply Drive. Help gather supplies in preparation for Kitten Season and drop-in for a shower on May 6th from 11am - 2pm. There will be lots of kitten cuddles, shower snacks and plenty of fun. A wish list will be available at LetLoveLive.org leading up to the event.
Summer will be here before you know it and along with it the SPCA's Dog Washes on the second Saturday of each month May through September. SPCA volunteers will happily lather, rinse and towel dry your dirty dog 'til he's fresh and clean. Nail trims and ear cleaning available, too. Prices vary depending on dog size and proceeds help the SPCA continue to care for the homeless dogs and cats awaiting adoption. Dog Wash dates are May 13, June 10, July 8, August 12 and September 9.
After the dog days of summer, it's time to get ready for another tail-waggin' good time at the 5th annual Barkaritaville Party for the Pets! Register a free themed booth to compete for prizes or purchase tickets to enjoy all of the fun food, drinks, games (including a costume contest!) and live music all night long. Barkaritaville will be held Saturday, October 21 from 5-8pm.
There you have it. Your calendar should now be full of some fantastic pet-friendly events that are not only tons of fun, but also help support a great, local cause. In case you lose your calendar though, or just want to check for updates, give the SPCA a call at 803-648-6863, check the calendar at www.LetLoveLive.org or follow along on Facebook at www.facebook.com/spcaalbrechtcenter. Have a very happy new year!
