Pick Me! SC Results – Thank You South Carolina!

October 11, 2018

On October 5-7, the SPCA Albrecht Center was one of 50 shelters, rescues and Petco stores across the state to participate in Pick Me! SC, a history-making statewide adoption event.  With combined forces, hard work, and the love of adopters, more than 1,188 animals statewide found their new forever homes over the three-day weekend.

The SPCA acted as the Midland’s hub for the event and hosted Barnwell County Animal Shelter during the weekend.  The Albrecht Center alone found homes for 14 dogs, 15 cats and 2 bunnies, and Barnwell found homes for 6 dogs and 2 cats.

The event was sponsored by the Petco Foundation and organized by No Kill South Carolina (NKSC).  Many shelters across the state, including the SPCA Albrecht Center, offered ‘no-fee’ adoptions, while others offered ‘low-fee’ as part of this lifesaving event.  “So many shelters told us they had never seen anything like it,” said the Director of NKSC Abigail Kamleiter. “People were lined up at the doors of our locations across the state.”

Long-Term Impact of Pick Me! SC

Many people who went to adopt this weekend shared that they had never visited their local shelter before the Pick Me! SC weekend. Organizers hope people will continue to see the value that shelters bring to their individual communities. “It really brought communities together to show pride in their area shelters. When people visit these shelters, they now realize they can have a tremendous impact on saving lives,” said Kamleiter.

The SPCA Albrecht Center is so thankful to have been a part of the community’s efforts to find homes for our area’s animals.  No matter how much work is put into caring for the animals at the SPCA, is doesn’t compare to a life in a forever home, and we cannot thank our adopters enough for helping our animals find that comfort and love.

From the Mountains to the Sea

Pick Me! SC truly was a statewide event, with shelter and rescues participating from the mountains of the Upstate to the beaches of the Lowcountry.  Here is how dog and cat adoptions broke down by region: Lowcounty (395), Midlands (343), Upstate (320), Pee Dee (120), other animals (10).  This brings the total to an amazing 1,188 animals adopted!

If you didn’t get a chance to adopt during Pick Me! SC, the SPCA Albrecht Center still has a TON of amazing animals that are looking for wonderful homes. Our cats and kittens are still just $25 and we have many long-stay pets that are desperate to find their person. Please visit us at 199 Willow Run Road in Aiken; Monday – Saturday 11 am to 5 pm. All of our adoptable animals are online: www.letlovelive.org. Thank you!
